Communique June 2020

Significant matters discussed at the meeting on 17 June 2020

QLAF’s last meeting was hosted virtually by Legal Aid Queensland in Brisbane.

QLAF received a guest presentation from Mr Scott McDougall, the Queensland Human Rights Commissioner, in relation to the Commission’s work in building capacity across the sector to comply with the Human Rights Act 2019, and in particular building a human rights culture in all organisations.

The implementation of the Human Rights Act 2019 is a standing agenda item for the QLAF and will become a standing agenda item of each of its Regional Legal Assistance Forums.

QLAF received and discussed reports submitted by Regional Legal Assistance Forums which identified a broad range of issues across the State.  Some issues raised in previous RLAF meetings have been actioned.  RLAFs will be a focus of future project funding proposals.

The Commonwealth provided an update on the finalisation of the NLAP and the Commonwealth’s bushfire and Covid-19 responses.

Interested parties are encouraged to get in touch with QLAF members if they wish to discuss any of these matters further.

More information about QLAF and minutes of previous meetings may be found at www.qlaf.org.au
